The sternum strap has been deliberately designed so that it can be removed by unthreading it from the drawstrings.
Many people prefer not to use a sternum strap.
The pocket in the shoulder strap is designed to hold the sternum strap, so you can find it again if you decide to remove it.
You can just as easily thread the sternum strap back into the piping on the straps.
